New Jersey’s Successor Solar Incentive Program (SuSI)
New Jersey’s SuSI Program includes two key aspects: the Administratively Determined Incentive and the Competitive Solar Incentive. Both sub-programs aim to encourage New Jersey residents to embrace and transition to solar power to achieve 100% clean energy production by 2050.
The Administratively Determined Incentive (ADI)
The Administratively Determined Incentive Program will provide fixed incentives for the following categories of projects:
- Net metered projects serving residential customers;
- Net metered projects serving commercial and industrial projects of 5 MW or less;
- Community solar projects; and
- On an interim basis, grid supply projects located on properly closed sanitary landfills, brownfields, and areas of historic fill (previously known as “subsection (t)” projects).
–New Jersey’s Clean Energy ProgramNet Metering in New Jersey
Net metering helps customers maximize their renewable energy investments. It enables customers to receive full retail credit on their utility bill for each kWh of electricity their system produces over the course of a year. At the end of an annualized period, the customer-generator will receive credit on their utility bill at the wholesale value of electricity for any excess generation that remains. When a renewable energy system produces more electricity than the customer actually uses, the customer will be compensated with credits at the full retail value of the electricity for the production over and above what they use. For example, on a typical sunny day at moderate temperatures, a customer with a solar system may use less electricity than the system actually generates. When electricity production exceeds usage, the utility meter will spin backwards and provide the customer with credits for the excess energy produced. These credits can be used by customers as needed.
–New Jersey Board of Public UtilitiesThe Competitive Solar Incentive (CSI)
The Competitive Solar Incentive Program is a new program designed for grid supply projects and commercial and industrial net metered projects larger than 5 MW. Incentive values will be determined through a competitive solicitation process that awards capacity to projects with the lowest cost bids. This approach will leverage competition to ensure the lowest possible ratepayer contribution, particularly for large projects benefitting from economies of scale, while ensuring solar projects continue receiving the incentives they need to build.
