Does My Home Qualify for Solar? A Guide for the Homeowner

Solar roof panel

Don’t let anyone fool you. We are doing a lot in America to conserve our resources. The solar power used in this country offsets 70+ million tons of carbon dioxide annually. That is the equivalent of planting close to 1.2 billion trees.

You’ve heard it can save you money, it’s good for the environment and it’s the power of the future. Are you thinking it’s time to go solar?

Are you a homeowner who is wondering if your house qualifies for solar energy? We lay it all out for you here. Keep reading for your guide to whether or not your home is a candidate for solar panels.

Why Go Solar?

Thinking about going solar? There are many good reasons to do so. Let’s take a look at some of them.

1. Reduce or Even Eliminate Your Electric Bill

A solar panel system uses the sun to power your home. This free energy drastically reduces your utility bill and in some cases eliminates it altogether.

2. Great ROI

Don’t even think of going solar as an expense. With the significant savings on your electric bill, you will see a return on your investment of at least 20%.

3. Raise Your Property Value

Sell your home faster and for more money when you have a solar energy system. Property appraisers are considering solar systems when appraising homes for lenders. And buyers are increasingly looking for homes fitted with a solar energy system.

So to answer the question, “Are solar panels worth it?” Yes, they are.

From a Homeowner: Does My Home Qualify?

Solar panels are designed to function in all climates. Though that is not an issue, your roof might be. Do you need a new roof? Is your roof shaded by too many trees? What type of roof do you have?

1. Age of Your Roof

If your roof is near the end of its lifespan, you should replace it before installing solar panels. Solar panels last upwards of 40 years. You wouldn’t want to have to remove them in order to replace your roof a few years after installing them.

2. How Much Sunlight Does Your Roof Get?

South-facing roofs are the best for solar panels. If your roof faces south and has a slope somewhere between 15 and 40 degrees, your home is an ideal candidate. That’s not to say other homes are not suitable. It’s best to get an evaluation by a professional.

3. What Type of Roof Works Best?

The best roofing materials for solar panels are composite or asphalt shingles, standing seam metal or any type of concrete tile. If your roof is made of another type of material like slate or wood shake shingles, be sure to hire someone who has experience installing panels on that type of roof.
